| Where I used to live there were a lot of small dairies that still ear picked corn. Pickers and wire corn cribs were relatively cheap and drying wasn't necessary for storage. It also made a good feed. There was an outfit that came around and shelled any ear corn that wasn't fed on the farm so it could be sold. Used to be they shelled corn for the cobs. Last I knew they were charging a little bit plus keeping the cobs. Only downside I could see is the old New Idea pickers didn't have stripper plates and shelled a lot of corn off the cob on the snapping rolls. Shelling got worse as the corn dried down. I personally think they shelled enough corn off to pay a custom combine. | |
