Subject: Corn Head Stalk roll questions

MN
I've been researching different stalk rolls for our 612c Deere chopping head.

The least expensive are the OXBO, but I've found no one that's used them. We're strictly field corn. $130 dollars a row less than the Deere rolls

Second are the Deere knife rolls, They work well, but didn't last quite as long as I expected.

Calmers are around $150 more than the Deere. I've seen pictures, but don't know anyone using them.

I've heard of welding on the rolls on the older heads, but not the newer ones. Not sure the best technique to weld. The rear part of the rolls have a fairly significant amount of wear. The head will plug up at the back of the stalk rolls, and not pull through, leaving a straggler that will only pull through if I widen the deck plates.

Anyone have opinions or experience?

Thanks for your help.

I had a set of oxbo rolls before I bought a chopping head. They were much better then factory NH knife rolls, and could not hold a candle to my Gearinghoff chopping head. I would say the oxbo's are better than any factory roll I have ever seen and not too spendy I have never seen Calmers work in person.

I tried 4 -Calmers stalk rolls on my 8r22 JD 40 series corn head. In dry conditions it left a 20-24" corn post sticking up, shredded everything else into 1.5 to 2" bits-what was left standing may be easier on tires, when I combined after a rain event-more trash on the stalk was present, cost was around $1000/row-didn't do their chain or deck plate conversion. Will complete the other 4 rows for next yr.

I put the Oxbo rolls on last year. They should last longer than the JD knife rolls and do a good job.

Have a pair of calmers on my 612c to try on 175 acres, really like them so far. Need a rebuild so I think I'm going with them, they really chop up the stalks.

Is it a 612c corn head or a 612c stalk master? Go with colmer rolls worth the money! Just run your head fast! Nate

Call Clark Machine (800-658-4568). They make corn heads. I have one that has C-IH 2200 series stalk rolls and it does the best job for the money. The rolls can be turned end for end and get twice the ware. It is easy to change and VERY reasonable price.

btruck I don't mean to sound like I know what I'm talking about but we just bought a used 608C this fall and had the same issue. (straggler stalks getting hung up at the back of the deck plate). I noticed the previous owner had gapped the deck plates wrong, he had them set up wide in the front and narrow at the back. We put them narrow at the front and wider at the back and the problem went away. (never had a single stalk hang up the rest of harvest)......... Maybe your stalk rolls are wore out...... then just disregard this message. Darren

Running a 893 with the Pixall rolls.  What I found is it takes a good feeder house speed to to really chop well.  Found 660-680 is the minimum.  640 if I want to leave it ragged.  After running red cornheads I find the green one limits my ground speed if I want to destroy stalks.  5.2mph if I want them chewed to the ground.  Often I can run 6 and it will leave a stalk in "some" hybrids.  Pic shows two cornheads side by side.  Green one closest and red one distant.  Red one is nearly 35 years old.  I might look into the clark rolls that have the CIH style knives?  Don't know for sure since I have never seen them.

They are a sharp knife roll. They have more flutes on them, don't remember how many without looking. http://www.oxbocorp.com/Products/KnifeRolls.aspx

East Central Kansas
Which JD stalk rolls do you presently have? I assume opposed since you have a chopping head. I've been told that opposed wear out faster than intermeshing. How many acres are on present rolls?

Stalk rolls are wore out, but our deck plates are set wider at the front, been that way since new. I'll have to get them adjusted right.

Thanks,

Yes, a standard deck plate setup is 1-1/4" apart at the front and opened slightly wider at the back to reduce wedging 1-3/8"
