Subject: Spalling keyway on Ace hydraulic driven pump

NE CO
I own Raptor SP sprayer with a hydraulic driven Ace FMC-200-HYD pump. When the pump started leaking big time, I took it apart and discovered the SS nut had screwed off of the impeller shaft. Also, the shaft keyway between the pump shaft and impeller had spalled off about 1/2 inch back from the end of the shaft. I saw the same damage to the shaft last year when replacing the pump seal and I did replace the shaft. Also, I had a box of "spare"parts I received when I bought the sprayer, and it had three used SS pump shafts, all with the same spalling on the end of the keyway on the shaft. The pump is controlled by an on/off rocker switch in the cab. It seems to me that engaging the pump must be delivering a real jolt of hydraulic flow to the pump to be causing these failures. Is there some kind of flow limiter or an accumulator that can be put in the line to control the startup surge pressure to the pump? Or do I have something else going on that I don't understand?
