North Central Iowa | I'm teach precision ag at a community college and have use several programs including StarPal (the other being SMS Mobile, ArcPad, SST). I've personally gotten hooked on HGIS as it is simple and easy to use. Because I use it for teaching purposes, I'm using the Pro version instead of the Basic, but for what you want to do the Basic would be just fine.
The other nice part of HGIS is that the software is designed and supported by one person, who has always been very helpful when I needed help and responds fairly quickly, usually within 30 minutes.
The nice part of HGIS is the navigating part, plug in the map and it navigate you to the next soil sample point. That is what the students really like to.
