Bruce- call Dale Mutch at the Kellog Biological Farm in Hickory Corners. MSU also has some excellant publications on covers, most of the work done by Dale and his staff. Mike Plumer and him have worked together on some projects, and Dale has some opinions on ryegrass that you may want to talk to him about before you jump in.

We've been using Aroostock Rye for a number of years ahead of soys and drybeans. Myself, I don't like clover as a cover as I have many better alternatives for our farm. Many conventional growers here do like it, though. I prefer a broadleaf cover in front of corn, and I usually use something that winter kills. We have a pretty poor rotation in my opinion (corn/soy), so I use covers to help out with some of the problems that rotation has.

I'd get ahold of Dale, he's a real interesting guy and loves to work with farmers.
