Subject: Hauling Hay by rail

Kansas
Had one of the big hay guys near me tell me that he heard of someone once doing this. Said they put it in enclosed cargo cars, stuck a skid loader inside then used it to maneuver the bales til they got to the middle then they got the skid steer out and loader did the rest. I was curious as to why they just didn't use flat cars, but then using the big names (UP/SP and BNSF) they might take a month getting it to it's destination (short lines would probably have it done in a week or less) and that could be a lot of rain on them. I also think it would be hard to find a place to load to begin with. And unless you did use a short line co. all the way I'm sure it wouldn't be very cost effective.
