about the terrace thing. Crop residue will not ever be more effective or even equal to the ability of a terrace to physically stop water from picking up speed and gathering dirt on it's merry way downhill. I farm some ground that has been notilled for a long time and it is ditched up pretty bad. Residue had very little effect on these ditches from getting larger every year, since where the ditch is, there is no residue at all. Terraces are the only way to stop that nonsense unless you seed the whole farm down to brome.

Most of the ground I go over is pretty steep and all terraced. Some of these terraces are more than 50 years old and work perfectly. they do slow you down, but at least you can still grow row crops.
