Leave Short Alfalfa Stubble
For the best combination of yield and quality, University of Wisconsin agronomists say to cut alfalfa as short as possible. Leaving short stubble maximizes yield with little sacrifice in quality, they say. Their recommendations:
Cut healthy, non-stressed alfalfa fields at 1" heights.
In fields where plants are stressed by drought or flooding, or where the crop has been cut early and frequently, root carbohydrate reserves may be low. Adjust cutting height upward to avoid additional stress or plant death.
Raise cutting height to avoid injuring plants, contaminating the forage with soil or picking up rocks.
In fall, leave a 4" or greater stubble to capture snow.
