SE South Dakota | Yes I do figure that I end up with a better stand this way. I mean the openers just do not have to cut thru and bounce over the root balls and the stalks from last years corn. Also the seed is thicker per foot in the 15" over 7.5" and I believe that this helps with emergence some too.
The stalks... well you do see more of them going thru the combine but alot of them just push over and flow under the cutterbar. The volume of stalks that actually goes thru the machine hardly could have any effect on the capcity of the machine, they are so rotten by the time the combines roll. Maybe a bit more dust though.
I would much rather see the stalks standing tall after planting over them all mashed down on the ground covering the emerging soybean seed.
I'm sure little of the above is news to most but it is what I have noticed. | |
