Subject: JD 7000 Marker Arm Problem

Paulding County, Ohio
I have a "new to me" JD 7000 6 row planter. The marker arms aren't working correctly. The right (actuator) side is the only one that will raise and lower, the left side will not. Thus far today we removed the actuator 3-4 times, cleaned out the rats nest on the first round, and still can't get it to work.

When we operate the acuator outside the planter frame it seems to cycle correctly, full extension when raised, right side collapse, then left side. When we install and hook up the cables it doesn't let the left side down. We tried lengthening the cables all the way out, it didn't help either.

Any suggestions or experience are welcome.

Thanks,

Joe.

Is the cable broken? That was a common problem. If it is you will have to thread a piece of electric fence wire or something similar through the frame to pull the new cable through.

Manila, Ar
the track is probably wore out.........the track has to switch to the other side.........The hook part of the track has probably rounded off..........weld and grind the hook back square and it should work..........:)

+1 Also make sure rods are straight and not too bent.

I once hung two bricks for weight on the end of one arm. IT would come down a ways, but not totally.....however, I could push it down the rest of the way with one finger.......so after spending about l$500 in cables and hydraulic upgrades, I finally got it to work.....with the two bricks for weight. Used it that way for several years before trading it off.

Agreed. That is a single acting cylinder and it has to pull tight on the cable to switch to the other side. And its got hydraulic power only for raising the marker.

Small 4 and 6 row, maybe 8 row rigid use one cylinder and do the alternating mechanically. Wider and folding use one cylinder per marker and a hydraulic alternating valve. Don't know about the conservation version.

Oil it. The marker lock up needs to be 180 degrees from locked, keeps the marker out slightly. Spring condition on the long cable? Local JD dealer used to push the boomerang piece......replacing or building up the ends with weld tended to help but in 10 years with my 7000 6 row I think I planted only one field one time that the markers switched correctly every time.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Ended up that the marker arms need some resistance to work properly when the actuator was installed in the planter. They needed to hit the spring stops in order for the mechanical switch to change one side to the other.
