Subject: Backhoe Controls Choice

Canmore Ab. Canada
I picked up a new backhoe and can choose SAE (Cat) or ISO (John Deere) control styles by the flip of a switch. Which one should I learn and why? Thanks. Dan...

Edit. Yep, it looks like it is the other way around. Dan...

I think Cat is ISO or "excavator" controls and Deere is SAE or "backhoe loader" controls.

Right or wrong I know the SAE pattern.

It seems that most machines now are switchable, so it doesn't matter which pattern you learn.

If you plan on running anything other than Deere I would learn "cat" style I feel like its more natural but I'm biased since that's what I own and run.

Learn both. I can run either. Learned on a Case backhoe but later on gave a trackhoe a try and got the hang of it after a half hour. Jumping from one to the other takes a few minutes to adjust.

I am used to JD myself! had it on both a ford hoe tractor and now an excavator .Had a cat guy try to run the excavator and had quite the humbling experience! But I will admit to preferring hand and foot in a skidsteer over pilot controls!

I use SAE but it is a 50/50 split on our place between all of us.

As someone who has ran both CAT and Deere type controls, I run (and now prefer) Deere controls over CAT. I like the fact that you have control of the dipper stick and bucket on the same stick, I feel it's easier for fine grading.

We have an older CAT backhoe that has the old style (SAE) controls. We visited the CAT museum in Peoria last winter . They have a Excavator simulator there with the CAT type controls. It only took a couple minutes for me to get on to the "excavator" type controls. Before I was finished I had about 8-10 people watching and marveling how well I was doing, most had already tried and had problems. I never bothered to tell them I owned a backhoe. :~))

A friend has a small "Bobcat" excavator that he uses in his contracting business. He hates running our backhoe, says everything is backwards to him.

My six year old daughter did the trackhoe simulator at the John Deere Pavilion in Moline a few weeks ago. She got pretty good at it too. I guess she can only work for an excavator with Deere hoes now cause thats what she is used to. I think I did worse because I was always second guessing myself. She snapped right into it because she wasn't trying to impress anyone. Mind over matter.
