I know I'm geting a lot of flak for this, but my contention is that most of the shields don't make a real contribution to safety and may even make a combine more unsafe. Basically, people aren't around an operating combine. Its too dirty, noisy and it is moving in the field. I shut down the machine when unloading at a truck. The only time a person is near an operating machine is for troubleshooting, and then shields dangling, laying on the ground connected by cables and so on are a hazard. You are busy opening and navigating around shileds and not paying atention to the real source of danger. As someone else mentioned, the only purpose many of the shields serve is to insulate companies from lawsuits. Now PTO shileds on a tractor/auger are another case. Pepole are working around them and they are a hazard. They are maintained and kept in place. Most combine shields are not that useful it seems to me.
