Subject: How to mount engine from a 1586 on a stand

Phillips Co NW Kansas
I am going to build a stand for rebuilding diesel engines and also use it for gas engines. I have seen pics on here of a stand I like but I believe it had a JD engine on it. I will be using a gearbox for a pivot so I can rotate it. The one I seen on here used a bar to mount to the side of the engine and then the bar mounted to a plate that bolted to the gear box.

It looks to me like I am going to have to mount this on the clutch end and that will leave alot of weight hanging over the end. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

If these pics come thru we basically made a stand from channel to duplicate the frame rails of the tractor (4010 in this case) and hung each rail (channel) from a pivot point. The engine hangs from the sides like it does in the frame, not the end of it. These pics don't show it but he added a gear box later so we could spin it. It gets HEAVY!!  We also made one end so it has a nut to tighten the pipe from turning.  Worked very nicely!!

Rather than invest alot of time in building an engine stand, check out www.twisterenginestands.com . My local repair shop has 4 of them and I have one in my shop. They are well engineered and work great. He has several different engine plates for ag engines and a universal mount for the gas engines.

OTC motor revolver #1750A. Rated at 6000 lbs. Would break the bank to buy one, but have used one and it is the best I have ever seen. Its in the online catalog from OTC. Would give you a few ideas.

my stand is an old dealer stand used for TA housings It requires a different plate bolted to it to use on the 400 series engines. It bolts to the right side of the block with the oil cooler and oil filter base bolt hoses . I think yhe plate is 3/4" thick

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

For heavy diesel engines(inline 6 cylinders), I rather spend money on an electric chain hoist and A-frame, and just use a little 2 foot tall table, with a flat top (top about roughly 2 1/2 ft x 3ft). The best thing about a flat table is that there is no tripping over those legs, like you see on those "rotating engine stands". (we built the tables, so the engine blocks, sat over the ends of the table, about an 1.5" = that way the front and rear covers can be installed, block stays put) Note: measure your block's lenght= maybe 34" is all you want

Now, we had overhead hoists, so it was easy to flip the engine over, upright, sideways, up-side-down, etc. Everyone used these small tables; and the big, rotating OTC engine stand sat outside(= only seen it used twice, in many years).

For car engines, just go buy a 1000-1200 lb, 4 wheel engine stand for $59-$79. (don't buy the 750 lb, 3 wheel model=I barely felt comfortable, with a 4 cylinder gas engine on it.= sold it for $20 and got larger model, for at home

If I was in a heavy steel-framed building, I would just position a chain hoist, or cable hoist, onto a larger overhead beam, and just work underneath that area, with the small table, for the engine.

Now, the final thing to install was the oil pump, and oil pan. Small diesels, just hung from the overhead hoist; but larger diesels, used 12 ton jack stands on OEM engine mounts or used two small tables= one at rear cover, one at front cover, then installed items from the bottom, on a creeper(for safety, we would leave on the overhead hoist chains, too)

{I guess, the oil pan thing, might be easier with an expensive, rotating engine stand.}   Some guys put on oil pumps and pans, with the engine setting on its rear cover, BUT you have to be cautious flipping the engine, horizontal again(hoist plus chain come-a-long)

Well, That's just another view point, on this subject.

I built one from a red combine final drive.  I put a used 50-1 gear reduction motor on the input shaft to rotate the engine.  The frame is 5x7 box (cultivator bar) and we made it so you could tote it around with a forklift.  Its not perfect but is very functional, stout, and didn't break the bank.

Not not canvas... It's a bit heavy for that!!  I think it's an Overhead brand.  Large 6 inch channels for stabilizers with the straps to support them.
