Subject: RE: CIH 955/interplant vs. CIH 5500 soybean special

Driftless SW Wisconsin

A issue with both of these units is residue clearance between the row units. Since the row units on both of these are only staggered about 7", when planting 15" beans into cornstalks there is just not much room between the rows for corn rootballs etc. The JD 1780 15" splitter has the same situation. They are really not intended to plant no till beans into cornstalks.

This is very different from planting 15"" beans into cornstalks with a planter where the row units are fully staggered in the side view such as the Kinze Twinlines or JD 1790. Even in worked cornstalks there are still a lot of rootballs etc on the surface. If you clear them at all (which you need to imho to reduce plugging the squeeze disks with rootballs and get uniform seed depth) you need clearance to get the rootballs etc between the row units.

If you are planting second crop beans into wheat stubble with no row cleaning then may not be a problem.  Or if you are thoroughly working the ground ahead of 15" planting, lack of full stagger may not be a problem.
