He bought all this over the years instead of life insurance. The idea was that his wife would be able to sell these for income as needed, instead of collecting on his life insurance. As it turned out his wife died many years before him, and his plan was not needed. Sad to say but both died of cancer.
He was a successful farmer as well as a collector.
