Subject: Re: Thinking about data..

I will start by being cynical and ask why you are collecting data if you don’t know how to analyze it? The theory (spatial analysis and other non-traditional approaches), technology (computers), and the software need to analyze the data exist. You face several issues. There is an old statistical saying – garbage in and garbage out. If you don’t have a QA/QC program for ALL of the data used in the analyses, forget it. Missing data represents several deadly sins. The most deadly is the adage “if you didn’t measure it, you can’t analyze it”. And claiming that you can extrapolate some factor from some other piece of data makes the problem 10x worse. Information from a small geographic area can start the process of creating information from data but creating knowledge requires spatial diversity.

Once you reach a certain technology point, generating good data is pretty simple and relatively inexpensive. Big planters or alternatively good differential GPS guidance makes whole farm strip trials easy to do on all of your client’s fields. So beyoynd this obvious step, how are you going to make incremental improvements?
