| You are supposed to obtain a radio license from the FCC to use the 400 MHZ. I had a radio license for two way farm radios. The company I dealt with to get the license was able to "piggy back" my frequencies for the RTK transmitter radio to my existing license--in effect adding more frequencies to my existing radio license. The process is not that difficult once you get with a company that takes care of the licensing stuff for you. If I recall, the license and all the paper work was about $400.
If your valleys are really deap, you may still need a repeater, which Outback does have if you end up not having coverage in an area. The 400 MHZ will transmitt a larger diameter of coverage than the 900 MHZ--in my area when I have tested the 400 MHZ is about 18 miles and the 900 MHZ was about 6-8 miles ( I am in really flat country). The 400 MHZ seems to penetrate foliage a bit better, but the further you get from the base the less foliage it tends to pentrate. | |
