Subject: RE: John Deere 4850 axle bearing

I did an old tractor of ours last spring. When initially taking it apart I just used torches and hung the entire trumpet from our loader so when I heated the bearing it all just came apart. When I needed to tighten and adjust the rolling drag I use a hydraulic bottle jack to press it apart. The whole thing went pretty easy especially since I didn't precisely follow the manuals instructions as they seemed a little backwards. It said insert lead shot and tighten planetary carrier on to X foot-pounds. Then measure rolling drag and redo over until correct rolling drag is found. I tightened until correct rolling drag was achieved then put in shim pack. I bought an expensive torque wrench because of that manual and didn't end up actually needing it.
