some eroded knolls from the dust bowl days have zero topsoil, just yellow clay, the hollows have anywhere from 6 inches to 2 feet depending on the field, on average i'd say a 8-12 inches, with 20 feet of clay below that. the clay has no bottom to it when we get wet, and turns to concrete when we are dry. With minimal topsoil and "tough to deal with clay" below that we are always a few rains from saturated and a few days from drought. we teeter all year long it seems.
