“These are the times that try men's souls.” | No I don't think so. Big dairies are just feeding non-bred cows fat, then replacing them with new heifers. Some dairies are only A.I. heifers, then breeding milking herds to Black Angus bulls to sell calves for beef. They are still raising plenty of heifers. Health care, better feeding, just better over all management of cows. Guys learn how to feed cows cheaper after 09'. Every dairy is different, but this is some of what I see. Lot are still losing money if you figure they have to pay for high feed costs.
