Haven't really looked at one of these up close, but after reading thru the posts in this thread, I'll venture guess.

1) Not enough grease when the unit was assembled. The bearing next to the seal, is seeing enough side loading, that it's heating enough to melt what grease there was out it.

2) That heat is also transferring to the seal, so you get enough seal damage to start letting fine dirt past it.

3) Now compounding the problem with the dirt just making everything fail faster, more excessive wear on that bearing, so it looses enough material to make the whole assembly go loose. That causes the other bearing to start failing.

4) Grease zert on new replacement piece, means Deere knows they have a problem, but you can bet the bean counters have figured to do replacements on a "fail only" program, with a time period attached. Get past the time period, you eat the cost.
