Baldwin City, KS | I have a vertical mixer and a tub grinder. The grinder is capable of grinding hay into small pieces much faster than the vertical. Then the mixer can be reloaded and only has to mix. When we feed stalks through the vertical that weren't ground first, the cows leave alot of feed in the bunk. If run through the grinder and split open first, the cows eat it all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your wagon, or your feeding program. It's just that a tub grinder is stationary, not designed to feed into bunks, and uses a hammermill at high speed to destroy the hay bale. A vertical mixer is a one man band, designed to feed into a bunk, but uses the auger(s) and knives at low speeds to tear a bale down to where it can be mixed with commodities, then fed into a bunk. I think the tub grinder was here and had a name/definition, well before the vertical mixer on wheels existed. | |
