You need to check out if it is really "decorative" or not. We replaced a wood burning fireplace with a very efficient gas fireplace that has a small fan and its own outside air intake for combustion air. We use it to warm up the living room when it is cold and damp and you feel a need to toast your behind a little. Actually, it makes the room too hot if you leave it on very long and it is the makers smallest unit.
Just the pilot light makes the living room one degree F warmer than the rest of the house. It is also a nice back up for the furnace in case it fails or if we lose electrical power as it will without AC power.
