Do what is right for the sake of doing what is right, not looking for something in return.  Yes, hoping for something in return is only natural but don't do things for the wrong reasons.  Getting hurt and being taken advantage of are all in how you perceive what has taken place.  Live up to those "great character" expections of others; continue to have moral value, compassion and respect for others.  Quit looking back so much and look forward.
