If you have plenty of hay and not buying expensive stuff you are right.
But then if you are short of feed or have poor quality then there is thr question.
I my self have very little acrage to us for hay and not many acrage available in the area to produce quality hay. So I have explored ways to create cheaper feed source.
So I have purchased a tub grinder , planted rye on acrage that will go to beans. I cut the rye usually in may. The tonage of rye has been enormous per acre. But have found that it needs ground and molasses added to it. My cows are looking better then ever. Also now I can run more head on the same acrage witch makes it more productive.
Hope this helps. You are right if not something you need then it is very expensive.
Simple some time is best. You need to see the best for you.
