What header size are you planning to run? A 20 ft head is not too hard to spread uniform. 30 ft is more difficult and probably more important due to the amount of material to plant into if not properly spread. We run a 1688 with chopper and newer factory spinners with blades set in most agressive setting. I took the stationary knives out shortly after we bought the combine and have never put them back in. I personally like the straw a little longer (not shredded) as it takes longer to break down. Chopper uses less power this way too. This setup uniformly spreads the entire 30 ft.

Had a 1460 w 20 ft. head previously w/o chopper. There were strips in the spring where the combine had traveled. Not sure if it is more the chopper or the newer spreaders, but there is night and day difference between spread patterns on the two combines.
