Subject: RE: A Few More

NEMO
We feed with the trucks and the cows seem to follow us just about anywhere, even into the corral. When we want to catch them we use the little square bales of alfalfa, it is pretty much like candy to them! I used to use corn, but the cows eat it too quickly and then they are ready to leave; with hay it takes them longer so you have more time. It doesn't always go as quick as it did this time, though.

With the 2 pens on the corral, we will catch the majority of the cattle, and then wait or go push the stragglers up with the trucks into the other open pen. We usually never get out of the trucks (or shut the truck off) until ready to shut the gates because they don't seem afraid or threatened by them since they associate the truck with feed.

I like to have the corral set up a day or two in advance, but this past week we worked several different groups in several different pastures and had the vet scheduled, so prayed that it would all work out, and it did. On one group the cows came to the corral as we were setting it up and all we had to do is break 2 or 3 alfalfa bales and had them in less than the 20 minutes. It must of been on the right side of the sign this past week to work cattle!!!

Another big benefit of the Hereford genetics though is their docility! Rounding up cattle is so much easier now than before and a lot less work!!!
