Subject: Re: Welding steel liquid 28 tank?

Faunsdale, AL
Had an uncle who was a chemical engineer at a fertilizer plant (Mississippi Chemical, Yazoo City MS) and he always warned against welding on liquid tanks. Back in those days, we used ammonium nitrate liquor, so essentially the straight stuff.

I had the job of re-purposing an old storage tank into a water storage tank for washing cows before milking. It sure was tempting to just grab the torch instead of drilling lots of holes through the ~3/8" thick tank to get a 12" square hole through the top of it!

In about 1967, they quit producing ammonium nitrate liquor and swapped over to shipping anhydrous, so we did as well.
