Subject: Re: 595R and Chopping Corn Head

I don't think going down to a 585R/575R is going to help, those machines have a drive system that is not as strong compared to that on a 595R. That said, with a machine that big behind that cornhead, everything in the drive system does need to be up to par, and even then in certain varieties or seasons one can exceed the design limit of the system. Still something doesn't sound right as the set of triple belts that run the front countershaft are not usually the problem, the variable speed belt is more often the limiting factor in tough corn. The upgraded cast tensioner pulley on the feederhouse, good fresh countershaft bearings, and running the later-style heavy-duty tensioner and tensioning these belts a bit over what the indicator would have you set them to should help considerably, in addition to making sure your feederhouse faceplate angle isn't set back to far making the cornhead run too flat - that increases power requirements as well. I would also take a strong look at the drive pulley behind the t/s sheave to make sure that is sound. You are pretty certain that it is these and not the variable speed belt that is the problem?
