SEON
No it isn't worth any more than $50/acre. Anyone that thinks it is can work it themselves IMO.

$20/ton to cut it
$10/ton to condition it
$10/ton to tedd it a couple of times and rake it
$20/ton to bale it
then you need to pick them up and store them in a barn, and dig them out.

I figure my production costs around $80/ton.

It costs $90/acre for seed plus all the tillage involved...probably $175/acre for moldboard plow and a couple of passes with the disk at and a couple with the cultivator...then tack on $25/acre for and then the drill. Now we are at $290/acre to establish the stand assuming no fertilizer. If it yeilds 2 tons/acre/yr x 4 years (no crop the first year) = 8 tons/acre for the life of the lease. $290/8 tons/ac = $36/ton to establish the stand without any fertilizer.

$80 + $36 = $116/ton cost without fertilizer and rent

Might be able to get a 5 year average price of $200/ton picked up at the barn. Probably not that much but let's say so. $200 - $116 = $84/ton profit before fertilizer and rent.

RENT: $50/acre x 5 years = $250/acre /8 tons/acre = $31/ton rent

$84/ton - $31 rent = $53 acre profit before fertilizer.

Would any of you row croppers trouble yourselves with a 10 ac piece of hay for $50/acre profit before fertilizer?
