Thanks for the suggestion Tim, but I think a grinder is more appropriate for what you are doing (feeding to fatten into bunks in a shed or feedlot) than what I am doing (cow/spring calf with cows outwintering in the woods and draws behind them in the pics). One of the posters here sent me a link to a presentation by Greg Judy from MO. Judy says he doesn't even own a tractor and his goal is to use zero hay, just mob graze and stockpile fescue. Being farther north, I don't think Judy's methods are really feasible in Wisconsin and north. For one we have no fescue and a lot longer winter usually with a lot more snow then in MO. I do like Judy's emphasis on soils, microbes and using cattle to improve soils. I do try to go to higher density/shorter duration rotational grazing when I can. I am probably somewhere in between daily feeding with equipment and Judy's system. There are lots of different ways to raise cattle in different parts of the country. No one "best" way to do things.
