Iowa | A growing year around or below 150 bpa=no difference
Good growing years, and the difference gets larger as the yields go up.
I had one ISU extension person tell me that this year, since we plant predominantly upright-leaf varieties (they catch more sunlight in narrower rows), the wide row corn suffered even at low yields due to the sunlight penetrating the wide canopy (or lack of it) and hitting the soil, baking the ground even more during the drought. If that's the case, it appears 30" rows, or even narrower, are best at both high and low yield scenarios now since the corn plant has been modified with upright leaves. | |
