Subject: Variable rate corn planting ???

Tip of the Thumb of Michigan

I have a ground drive 1770 planter, 30inch rows and grow about 500a corn each year.  We don't have yield monitor data.  We also don't have any very sand soil, but we do have some fields with small patches of gravelly subsoil.  I can think of a few spots where you might want to go to 30,000 versus the 35,000 we have been planting across all our acres.  We are running 20/20, so it would be rowflow.  We also have 1/2 width disconnect that I could set up automatic with the rowflow.  Will it be worth 5 or 6000 dollars?  How would I know what to set the planting rate at?  Precision has a great map builder, but I have to plug in the rate.  I know there would be little advantages to the hydraulic drive like loading the meters, no wheel slip or pressure problems and running the planter in the yard looking for problems, but those are extras.
