I'm guessing it is the lead shot-fall area. Where did they stand when shooting? The clay pigeons would be 20 to 50 yards out from that point. The shot-fall zone would be 100 or so yards away. If it is "lead poisoning" you might even check into the possiblity of "mining" the shot to remove it. There are companies that do that and it might even make you some money.
