Subject: Re: Cover crops vs Fall burndowns

Martinsville, Ohio
I chose covers over chemicals and I am not an organic farmer. I try to be a more biological farmer.

We've had a beautiful fall to sow every acre down. Others are using chemicals and that is good too, we must stay ahead of these weeds.

If we don't plant covers, I feel we need a chemical spray each season, that is at least 4 sprays.

Cereal rye is the best combatant I have found against my number one weed, Marestail. I am afraid hybrid pigweeds are going to try to take their place as number one.

I have the biggest radishes I ever had, I just don't have enough of them so I need to plant more when the opportunity arises. I had the opportunity to plant more acres of them but happy to have every acre covered with some cover.

I need to expand into more diverse cover crops and keep learning a little more about them every year.

Ed
