I am convinced that building granular structure is key to building OM in fine-textured soils unless pre-stabilized organic amendments like mature compost are being applied.

soil macro and micro aggregate structure provide physical protection of OM and slow its decomposition. Particulate OM (mostly from fine roots)
forms the core of most stable aggregates.
