I am new at this myself ( just bought one in july )
Befor realy giving a good answer I would like to no what type of hay you are talking about. mcupps is right about needing to tickel rumon. I have just went through some trouble.
I hear that Dairy is less need of stemy hay and more protein then beef.
I do think your hay will be used more efficently by grinding it just have to watch carefully.
As garvo said your calves will tell you what they need.
