No Mans Land , Cimarron co. OK. | Rock Road - 11/18/2012 23:40
I posted this earlier in Machinery Talk in response to a post there: Get your hands on the book "The Worst Hard Time" by Timothy Egan. A gripping story that details the entire period and what led up to it, as well as the aftermath. What struck me was that the government paid to get people out there, paid to get the land opened up, paid for the surplus wheat, paid to get the people removed, paid to plant shelter belts of trees, paid to covert back to grass through CRP, later paid to get ethanol going and now the trees are being torn out to start the whole thing over again. There are no trees here to cut down , never has been either, those that are here were planted and cared for by folks like my grand parents and my dad. Takes strong willed people to farm in this area where it dont rain , very few of the tree rows they planted survived, too tough of conditions. |
