I think my parents tried for a long time because it was 'better' for us kids. That and the church's condemnation of divorce. But things got a lot better for everyone involved when they finally went their separate ways. Not ideal, but neither are parents who fight all the time. I don't think it is any more pious to try and stay married if it isn't going to work.
