My experience in Mexico was good even though I, like you, don't care for the water. Most of the people we met there were from Canada. Very few from the US. So far as swimming goes, the human body is much more buoyant in salt water. a pair of flippers should be provided by the resort along with masks and snorkels. You won't have any trouble staying afloat with the proper gear. The water and the weather are nearly always perfect. Wear mirrored sunglasses for girl watching to keep the wife happy. ;-)
