The first place we saw such steep slopes being farmed was South of Grenoble,possibly near lac de serre poncon, although much of that looked like hay, rather than grain crops.  The other area was somewhere around Albi, I think, and there is was grain crops on mountain sides.  In the south, the vineyards are on every possible mountainside.
