West Salem, Illinois | Gravity take up is usually a weight set up positioned over the boot, instead of increasing the tension on the belt using the take up screws you add more weight. It's preety interesting to watch them work, when you load the leg the weights rise and when the leg is coming off of load they start to go down. Don't know if it would be necessary in a farm setting.
In response to the original question I would say definetly a galvanized leg, and if I was going below grade with the boot I would suggest a stainless steel boot. Person could get one fairly easily from a coop that is updating. Also when going below grade with the boot I would do anything possible to make the boot pit naturally drained. Sump pumps in a boot pit are nothing but a hassle, especially in the winter. | |
