Welcome to the willamette valley. d:-( There is much info on the feeding and breeding habits of the common grey field slug and many others. No-till provides the very best habitat for slugs to be a devistating pest. Now that you have a couple seasons of eggs, you will be fighting these things forever or until we are allowed to use other measures for control. Once methiocarb was taken away from us, slugs really gained a strong foothold. Ohio state university has some very good research on slugs and possible control measures. In fact, I think they are the leaders in researching the parasitic nematode for control. You can chisel, moldboard, disk, whatever you wish to do, but you will still have slugs. Especially if you are not used to dealing with them. Tillage will reduce their population quite a bit for a season. But it you quit the tillage, the first year return to no-till will be devastating. |
