WC Illinois | Everyone may be tired of the tillage radish posts, but I have another one. Took these pictures in a pit we dug on the headland of some radishes we planted the middle of August into 120bpa corn residue.
First pict is the tuber itself which seems to go down between 4 and 8 inches. Some of them have grown ridiculously huge and pushed up out of the ground to almost knee height, but this one in the picture is more common. No measuring tape by it, but it goes down 5in or so.
Next pict shows roots penetrating some pretty clear compaction layers.
Pict 3 shows more roots in the top few inches. We have some obvious compaction but I was amazed how mellow the soil was and how it crumbled apart even with the compaction layers. Not sure if that is due to the radishes or not.
Final picture shows radish root hairs down 34 inches in the subsoil. Glad to see many roots like this so deep, but it was very dry and hard even with the 8 inches of rain or so we have had since the drought eased up. If we don't get much more moisture the radishes might hurt us by using up any rain we have received.
