Central Nebraska | I shot myself last summer with a 3.5" framing nail. It deflected off a stud, traveled 16 inches in the air into my left thumb. It entered just on the left side of my thumb, went through the middle of the bone and out the other side. I immediately pulled it out and could tell by the way it felt it went through the bone. My wife was with me and I calmly walked to the car while she rounded up the kid. By the time we left the driveway I'd passed out from the pain and didn't come too until we go to the ER two miles away (lucky to build close to town). X-rays showed a hole through the bone and a fracture below it. I got a tetanus shot, antibiotics for three weeks, a visit with an orthepedic DR, and a month in a splint. Ortho DR was concerned if I flexed my thumb the tendons would pull off the rest of the bone and require surgery. It took six months before I had any strength in the thumb. | |
