Mow them off after the first freeze. Heck, Gramps Rule was no Ferns saw November, but I think his rule was geared towards not having anything left to do that might get in the way of deer season.
Just mow high, and then run the rake shallow as a rake to pile up the trash for burning...or make the grandkids haul it all out by hand.

The frost damage on ferns is an opening for Botrytis during late season warm ups, and gets rid of infected ferns reducing carryover in spring.
Cutting and clearing ferns also gets rid of rust in the field, or a good bit of it anyway, that carrys over real bad on fern trash.

Stuff changes, but the neighbors who grow the stuff all still clear like Gramps did.
