well depending on what differential source your using, the coordinates of the GPS signal can be the same, but the actual position of the machine will change. So yes, if you lay tile with a portable base station, and then need to find it later, for the exact position you would need the basestation in the same exact spot. but digging up tile if you are within a few feet of the actual position of it, I think you would be able to find it easily.
