Subject: Been losing sleep over this stuff

I've been troubled over national events, not who won, who lost, but is it all a distraction to what is really going on. I pulled these numbers from a couple places, and did some math. Any inaccuracy, blame me. I'm just trying to look at things on a relative scale. Inflation seems to have disguised so much to interpretation. So my current question, from a national sense, is 5% interest today, the same as 10% interest in 1978? Maybe not as crushing to the individual borrower, or maybe more so. Depends on many factors I guess. Are we assuming that if interest rates go up,that receipts must also keep pace? These numbers show that for 5% now to equal 5% of days gone by (as a portion of the budget), that we must double receipts. While holding expenditures ex. interest payments the same?

Interest currently 7% of Total Budget = 252B

2011 GDP 15.0T Receipts 2.3T Expenditure 3.6T
Debt 16.3T
@1%= 163B=7% receipts
@2%= 326B=14% receipts
@3%= 489B= 21% receipts
@5%= 815B= 35% receipts
@10%= 1.6T= 70% receipts

1978 GDP 2.22T Receipts 400B Expenditure 459B
Debt 1.25T
@1%= 12.5B=3% receipts
@2%= 25B=6% receipts
@3%= 37.5B= 9% receipts
@5%= 62.5B= 15%receipts
@10%= 125B=30% receipts
