Lethbridge, AB
Wonder if your neighbors have a dutch background?
I grew up in Holland and remember that in college a teacher use to tell us the same thing, don't remember the reason why but he use to say that is was not a good thing to plow under snow and should be avoided at all cost.
We have done it many times here in Southern Alberta and every time we do I always think about his statement.
In the beginning when we did it I use to keep an eye on if we had plowed part of a field and we would get snow overnight or a couple of days and keep plowing if I would be able in the next crop to see any difference, but never could tell.

My 2 cents, Koos
