Subject: RE: " GMO" Wheat

Northern Idaho
Yes it is illegal for transgenic or "GMO" wheat in be grown commercially in the U.S. and Canada. Monsanto did develop Roundup ready wheat over 10 years ago and I am sure if it became okay to grow it then they would instantly have several varieties on the market. Main thing holding GMO wheat back is all the foreign countries that we export to.

Clearfield or IMI wheat was derived from mutation breeding. Basically dosing normal wheat with mutagenic compounds and spraying with herbicides to look for resistance. Not sure why the public fear GMO's more than mutations.

I was told by someone that had been told by her doctor that the chemistry of wheat "changed" 30 years ago which why allergies and obesity are such a problem now. Total load of BS, talked to two different individuals with Ph.Ds that work with wheat quality and they say no dramatic changes have taken place in wheat quality in the past 50 years. Of course through breeding most of today's wheats have higher flour yield, better protein, etc. but these characteristics occurred in some wheats in the past.
